Gift-giving etiquette — what's done and what's not
Giving has its unwritten rules. We know most of them instinctively, but it helps to revisit them — especially before a wedding, a milestone birthday or a work celebration.
How much to spend
For an ordinary family birthday, a symbolic gift (€15–35). For milestones, weddings, a new baby, more — but follow your own means, not pressure. A thoughtful cheaper gift always beats an expensive generic one.
When to give
For birthdays on the day of the celebration, for weddings on the day of the ceremony or by post in advance. Sending a gift more than a week late is a faux pas — unless agreed.
How to accept an inappropriate gift
Always thank and acknowledge the intent, not the object. "Thank you, that's so thoughtful" works every time. Handle exchanges or passing on discreetly, later, without the giver finding out.
Saying thank you
A short text or message within 48 hours. For exceptional gifts (wedding, milestone), a hand-written card. It's not a formality — it's a gesture.
